Something happened last August 31. I was given a choice. Its looks like a win-win situation even now when I look at it. I didn't have to put up with shit anymore. It felt really good to leave. I was even given enough money so I can take it easy for the next months. I really appreciated that my being part of the pioneer team was taken into account. What's more comforting is the fatalistic sense that it's bound to happen sooner or later.

What I don't get is the lingering feeling of betrayal. Sure, the bosses had the prerogative on whether to tell us or not. BUT we had those talks where they told us that we were part of their future plans. Maybe that's the way they do it at the other side of the ocean. Is this what they call a sucker punch? Integrity is no longer needed in the new school of business? I hear you but I won't play that game. An explanation would have been welcome but not necessary. Welcome to the real world, right?

Maybe the unease has something to do with the fact that the other bosses had arranged to outline these choices right after our monthly party. It smells rotten...something personal and malicious...especially if you consider the barely restrained smirks. It happened days before the arrival of the real bosses.

Thank you for the lesson, guys. It's a lesson I had to learn. You really are damn good players. Too bad you reached your peak. Hopefully, you won't be able to ruin good people and good ideas with your insecurities and pettiness much longer.

If there's one thing I don't like...

...it's being on-stage. There's just something about it that makes me want to get away as far as I can.

I went to the Taste Asia Blogger's Meet Part II to help out at the cliquebooth. I was feeling out of sorts because of my recent bout with the flu so I tried to maintain a low profile all evening. I talked only to people in order to help them enjoy our booth. I didn't stray away from our designated area. The only time I left our booth was when I got food at the buffet table. The barbecue was really good, by the way.

After finishing my delicious meal, I was happy and content. I was oblivious to the proceedings.

Then Anitokid's name was called... His heartfelt entry won the Grand Prize at the SM Hypermarket Blog Writing contest! He won two tickets to Malaysia courtesy of SM. Unfortunately, AnitoKid was not able to attend because of a prior commitment. I went near the stage to tell Ms. Aileen Apolo that my friend won't be able to personally receive his award. She told me to receive the award in his behalf. I was reluctant but I knew I had to. What can happen, right? After all, I was just a stand-in.

Being on stage was a different matter. I was not prepared for the sight of many cameras trained on me. Nor was I ready for the attention of 400 bloggers. I can't think of anything cool to say. I painfully stammered a few words. I even forgot to thank the sponsors of the event. I guess, I'm not really cut-out for show business despite my dear departed lola's insistence. Thankfully, Anitokid called while I was at the stage. Another friend had called him about his win. I gave the phone to Ms. Aileen so she can relay his personal message to the crowd, the judges and the sponsors.

I went immediately back to our booth when the awarding was over. I avoided making eye contact. I stayed in that little corner the whole night. Buti na lang malapit sa cooler na puno ng ice-cold San Miguel Pale Pilsen.

The First Troll

Someone commented on my previous blog post about the PIPC scam. The person does not see anything fraudulent about the company despite it being registered in the SEC as a research company. The company is not legally allowed to do forex trading for clients. PIPC was scamming the government at the very least. Its usage of ABN-AMRO accounts may be an effort to make the company look legit. One PIPC client I talked to long before the event thought it was sanctioned by that bank.

The anonymous person shared his reasons why he thinks PIPC is above board. Normally, I wouldn't have the time to answer his assertions but he caught me in a good mood.

Here are some excepts and my answers:

"You're just reading the news. try to get some credible news from the company's perspective."

Aside from reading the news (which is a particularly a good starting point to learn things especially if stories from different sources agreed on what happened), I also did look for alternative sources. I found "proof" that PFEC and PIPC are related before I read the article detailing the connection.

Cristina Gonzalez-Tuason, PIPC general manager, requested the help of Interpol to locate Michael H.K. Liew. She wrote the NBI that she and other investors "have reason to believe that Mr. Liew unlawfully took [the] money of Performance Investments (BVI) to the grave prejudice of its investors...".

How am I supposed to get more "credible news from the company's perspective"? The PIPC general manager has already told the NBI and the Interpol that the owner ran away with the investors' money. If this person knows something more than the general manager, then perhaps he should tell me outright.

"The company, like i mentioned, is expanding in China...i don't think the owner just ran away because he felt like it, or one day he felt like quitting and left for the caribbean."

Does he really believe any of these? That Michael Liew either abandoned his Philippine clients for greener pastures in China or retired, while taking clients' money with him? This person thinks that any of the above scenarios is acceptable.

That this person doesn't "think a scam would last for ten years, and even expanding it abroad..." shows flawed reasoning. Rose Baladjay of Multitel gave good profits to "investors" for four to five years before the scam collapsed. Who knows how long that could have continued if internal factors did not cause its exposure? Length of existence and initial good profits does not mean its not a scam. Satisfied clients does not unmake a scam. Multitel still has supporters to this day. They absolve the company of any wrongdoing. Multitel, by the way, was also forex-enabled but it used another brokerage.

To Anonymous:

Instead of telling me what to do, why don't you write your OWN blog so you can stop hiding behind the cloak of anonymity? That way you can try to post "credible news" yourself. And without reading newspapers too...

Update on the PIPC scam

I first blogged about this last Friday because I'm interested in exploring the huge potential offered by foreign exchange trading to Filipinos. Scandals like these wouldn't help in the development of a mature trading community in the country. While I won't go as far as to call it an investment because of its highly speculative nature, I believe good, disciplined traders can earn enough to make forex trading a worthwhile undertaking.

I read the Performance Investment Products Corp. (PIPC) story last Friday and was curious enough to research its possible connection with the Performance Foreign Exchange Corporation (PFEC). I found out that the PIPC owner Michael Liew attended the inauguration of the PFEC Cebu branch as the Performance Chairman. The whole point of the initial post was that PIPC is somewhat related to PFEC. Given that relationship, I wrote that "I wouldn't "invest" in PFEC or any company in their group." I was surprised that a visitor to this blog took exception to the fact that I used the word "scam" in relation to PIPC. The Inquirer and the Daily Tribune calls it "$250-M scam" and "PIPC investment scam" respectively in their editions today so why shouldn't I call it what it is?

According to the lawyer of some clients, PIPC is "registered at the Securities and Exchange Commission as a research company and is not authorized to engage in foreign exchange trade. (Daily Tribune, 07/25/07 page 4).

This makes PIPC officially a SCAM. No ifs and buts about it.

Forex scheme wallops Forbes crowd

"A NUMBER of Forbes, Dasmariñas, and Urdaneta crowd have suffered embarrassing foreign exchange losses after being suckered into placing a minimum of $40,000 in an Internet-based forex investment fund scheme...."

Emphasis mine.

"Performance Investment started in the late ’90s as Performance Foreign Exchange Corp., with Liew taking in on board an ex-Allied Bank officer in Singapore, Roberto Borromeo, to help the venture hurdle the thicket of local regulatory rules...."

I am right. There's a major connection after all.

"The forex venture did immediately run into opposition from the Securities and Exchange Commission, which sued all the way to the Supreme Court, only to suffer a loss after the Bangko Sentral sided with Performance."

They have good lawyers and lobbyists too.

"Borromeo, who admitted having already heard of the Performance implosion earlier this week, said he and Liew parted ways sometime in 2004, with Borromeo taking control of Performance Foreign Exchange..."

Sometime in 2004? Pretty vague... Performance Chairman Liew helped open the PFEC Cebu branch in 2004.

PFEC released an ad in the Philippine Star today denying any connection to PIPC and the Performance Group of companies.

"Borromeo sought to distance his company from the similarly named Liew venture, saying his Performance is limited to being an Internet-based financial intermediary, with clients themselves doing the foreign exchange trading using Performance’s software for a fee..."

Not entirely true. They do have that option but most clients don't trade and many that did usually lose money. They are discouraged to do so. PFEC account managers and executives usually do it for them. That's the best way to keep those commissions coming.

Some clients of PIPC are suing the local incorporators as well. Some of the local incorporators come from wealthy and known families. I would give them the benefit of the doubt because no amount of money can be worth dragging their family name into the scandal. However, I will never believe that Michael Liew acted alone. His accomplices have to be discovered and punished as well.

MANILA, Philippines -- Another financial scandal has hit Filipino investors after online pyramiding schemes like Francswiss, which promised high returns, folded up when authorities exposed them.

This time, the victims appear to be the well-heeled.

As much as $250 million in investors’ funds may have been lost after the owner of a foreign exchange trading outfit disappeared, leaving the company’s bank accounts here and abroad nearly empty.

Because of this, an official of the trading firm called Performance Investments Products Corp. (PIPC) Thursday asked the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to help find the company’s Singaporean owner who is suspected of having salted away the funds.

In a letter to NBI Director Nestor M. Mantaring, Cristina Gonzalez-Tuason, PIPC general manager, requested the help of Interpol to locate Michael H.K. Liew, the owner of Performance Investments Products Corp. in the British Virgin Islands (Performance Investment, BVI)..."

Tsk...tsk... even the rich are not immune to the prospect of "easy" money. This is a big scam. Minimum investment is at 2 million pesos yata (around $40,000). It is estimated that the Singaporean owner Michael Liew had control of as much as $250 million of investors' money. The authorities have recovered around $2 million so far. Kawawa yung mga nag-invest at mga nag-refer ng clients sa company. Even the local partners and management staff claim to have invested their personal money in the venture. The loss of $250 million will have an impact on potential domestic investments. I imagine part of this money could have gone to the new company IPOs in the PSE.

I heard about Performance Investments (PIPC) from an acquaintance who told me that it is a sister company of the Performance Foreign Exchange Corporation (PFEC) that caters to higher-end clients. PFEC, by the way, is an online forex trading company in Makati. I wonder if he was able to pull out his investment in time. I didn't have the time and motivation to do some research about their connection until now.

Here's what I found out:

According to the PFEC website, its chairman is also a Michael Liew. He attended the inauguration of the Cebu branch. That information was taken down from the website when I last accessed it. I was able to save a copy of the web page.

I don't know how common the name "Michael Liew" is in Singapore but I wouldn't "invest" in PFEC or any company in their group.

Mr. Michael Liew of Performance Investment Products Inc. (PIPC) as well as the other partners and staff of PIPC also helped establish a fund to renovate the OB-Gyn complex in the Philippine General Hospital last year. This donation may have helped build his credibility among the well-heeled crowd.

By the way, Francswiss was mentioned in the article as well. =) Francswiss was a pyramiding scam that made the rounds in Metro Manila recently. At least four people asked me about it and I told them that the offered returns were not plausible.

The food fest itself was a big success. Kudos to SM Hypermart, Yehey.com and Aileen Apolo (with the help of some celebrity bloggers) for organizing the event. Drinks flowed freely until closing time. I had around five servings of Four Seasons shake from Fruitas plus countless Iced Tea from Nestle. Food was readily available. The waiters continuously served us food from sponsors. I felt so full with pika-pika that I just had one go (no rice!) at the buffet table. I liked the pork barbecue and the Thai chicken best while the wet sisig least. I saved space for the Crazy Choco fountain desert. The dark chocolate mix was especially good.

Wedding Photography

I usually assist the Fotogra duo Mimi and Karl when they cover weddings on weekends. Mimi and Karl are my friends and orgmates from way back in college. I witnessed their growth from hobbyists towards being two of the best photographers in the wedding industry. Proof of this is their recent consecutive nominations as top suppliers at the Weddings at Work Annual Awards. Most of their clients come from referrals and word of mouth. They are known especially for their fun and innovative style. I should know because they covered our wedding in Boracay last December, 2005. Some of their best works happened when they were able to collaborate with their like-minded supplier friends: Threelogy, Madge Lejano, Veluz...to name a few.

Why do I do this? Aside from the obvious pay-offs like cash, free food, travel and laughs, I also get the chance to play with Karl's extra Canon EOS 20D DSLR camera in a usually dynamic environment. I confess that I'm not yet that technically proficient. All I do is just little bit more than point and shoot but I don't let that get in the way of me having fun. Karl included one of my shots in a post in the Fotogra blog.

One sure sign that your bosses appreciate your value to the company is that they sometimes take you to lunch. Another sign is that they sponsor you to attend trainings and seminars that will contribute to your personal growth. Yesterday, we did both.

Our team, our American bosses and Ms. Cecile (36-persons in all) had lunch at the Bubba Gump theme restaurant in Greenbelt 3.

We take our lunch almost as seriously as we do our work.

He was the last man to rise from the table. He beat out bigger guys Carlo, Sam, Richard and Leslie for most shrimp eaten.

There was so much food. Even our appetite, whetted by the long wait, weren't able to handle the continuous stream of dishes brought by the waiters. I ate so much shrimp that I'm sure I won't order any in the coming months. Richard and Sam had to take medicines to offset allergic reactions. The food was a little bit oily and a little bit bland but I liked the lemonade with strawberry burst. I guess the menu is more suited to the American palate. Our staggering bill exceeded our wildest expectations. The total amount was much more than what an analyst makes in a month! I still remember the expression on Rick's face when he got it...he he he. It's safe to say that we won't be having our team lunches there again any time soon.

After the lunch, we headed to the nearby Renaissance Hotel (formerly New World) in order to attend a seminar sponsored by the Chartered Financial Analyst Society. Finance professionals from some brokerage houses and investment institutions were our co-attendees. We saw Leo Quinitio and his team from the Philippine Stock Exchange. The speaker, Marc Faber, really knows what he was talking about. He discussed long and short term economic, political and financial considerations at play in the global markets. His insights on the matter were very interesting. He presented a credible macroeconomic context to the research that the team is doing right now. I aim to read more about some topics he mentioned.

Manny Pacquiao, "The People's Champion"

Manny spent around 170 million pesos for the election. That's more than $3 million. What a waste! Can he even afford to lose that much given his lifestyle and his vices? He could have donated that huge amount to Gawad Kalinga so the foundation can build 2,800 more safe and beautiful houses for poor Filipinos living in slums. I know its his money to lose but he wanted to lose it just to be able to be in a position to "serve" the people. Where did he even get the idea that congressmen serve the people?

Don't be too hard on the GCM mentioned in the linked Inquirer article. His greed helped show Manny's inability and unwillingness to think for himself. Why else would Manny have let the GCM handle the campaign despite getting bad advice, poor results and a much thinner wallet from him? Manny's really a bad judge of character. He cannot distinguish good people from bad as his associations with Gloria, Chavit, GCM, Murad Muhammad et. al. show. He is lucky to have Freddie Roach in his corner. What would have happened to Gen San if Manny had won? This GCM and his friends would be in positions of power that will only lead to wide-scale corruption. How in the hell did Manny come up with the idea that he can distinguish good laws from bad, much less read them?

In case you still believe Manny fights for the Filipino people, you must look objectively at what he does. His running for Congress, his album, his crap movie, his womanizing speak only of his love for himself and his huge ego. He fights for himself, for money and what stature his victories gives him. He is willing to to sacrifice legislative agenda for Gen San and its people as long as he gets to call himself "Congressman". Too bad...

Manny's boxing legacy will be tainted forever by what he did (and does) outside the ring. He does not deserve to be mentioned in the same breath with Gabriel "Flash" Elorde. The Flash simply had much more skill, more class, and more humility. Elorde paved the way for mainstream recognition for Filipino fighters in the boxing world. He had no delusions of grandeur. Manny is just a great fighter with great opportunities to earn money. I will still watch Manny's fights and cheer for him but I will view him as the man he is. No more and no less...

Kudos to Gen San voters who voted against him. Sometimes, the electoral process in the Philippines does work!

LEVEL 1: It's 11pm on a weeknight, you've had a few beers.

Just as you get up to leave because you have to work the next day, one of your friends buys another round -- one of your *unemployed* friends. Here, at level one, you think to yourself, "Oh come on, this is silly, as long as I get seven hours of sleep, I'll be fine."

LEVEL 2: It's midnight. You've had a few more beers.

You've just spent 20 minutes arguing against the use of artificial turf. You get up to leave again, but at level two, a little devil appears on your shoulder. And now you're thinking, "Hey! I'm out with my friends! What am I working for anyway? These are the good times! Besides, as long as I get five hours of sleep, I'm cool."

LEVEL 3: 1am. You've abandoned beer for tequila.

You've just spent 20 minutes arguing FOR the use of artificial turf. And now you're thinking, "Our waitress is the most beautiful woman I've ever seen!"

At level three, you love the world. On the way to the bathroom, you buy a drink for the stranger at the end of the bar just because you like his face. You get drinking fantasies (like, "Hey fellas, if we bought our own bar, we could live together forever. We could do it. Tommy, you could cook."). But at level three, that devil is a little bit bigger... and he's buying. And you're thinking, "Oh, come on, come on now. As long as I get three hours of sleep... and a complete change of blood, I'm cool."

LEVEL 4: 2am. And the devil is bartending.

For last call, you ordered a bottle of rum (Fundador Brandy in our case) and a Coke. You ARE artificial turf!

This time, on your way to the bathroom, you punch the stranger at the end of the bar just because you don't like his face! You and your friends decide to leave, right after you get thrown out, and one of you knows an afterhours bar.

Here, at level four, you actually think to yourself, "Well... as long as I'm only going to get a few hours sleep anyway, I may as well stay up all night! Yeah! That'd be good for me. I don't mind going to that board meeting looking like Keith Richards. Yeah, I'll turn that around, make it work for me. And besides, as long as I get 31 hours sleep tomorrow, I'm cool."

LEVEL 5: 5am.

After unsuccessfully trying to get your money back at the tattoo parlor ("But I don't even know anybody named Simon!"), you and your friends wind up across the state line in a bar with guys who have been in prison as recently as... that morning. It's the kind of place where even the devil is saying, "Uh, I gotta turn in. I gotta be in Hell by nine."

At this point, you're all drinking some kind of thick blue liquor, like something from a Klingon wedding. A waitress with fresh stitches comes over, and you think to yourself, "Someday I'm gonna marry that girl!" One of your friends stands up and screams, "WE'RE DRIVIN' TO VEGAS, BABY!!!!!" (or Puerto Galera... Ha Ha) -- and passes out.

You crawl outside for air, and then you hit the worst part of level 5 -- the sun. You weren't expecting that were you? You never do. You walk out of a bar in daylight, and you see people on their way to work or worse, jogging. And they look at you and they know. And they say, "Who's Simon?" Let's be honest, if you're 19 and you stay up all night, it's like a victory -- you've beat the night. But if you're over 30, then that sun is like God's flashlight.

We all say the same prayer and then, "I swear, I will never do this again as long as I live!" And some of us have that little addition, "and this time, I mean it!"

I think that our nation's archetype would be a talented high school freshman orphan who is studying with some help from a well-off (and arrogant) Tito from abroad. A Tita is her local guardian but this Tita uses most of the money meant for the child's schooling expenses for herself. The Tita also verbally and physically abuses her. The child is aware of things that happen around her but she does not act on them because she feels powerless as an individual. She usually goes with the flow. She tries to sugarcoat this feeling of powerlessness with humor, partying and "having fun". One big desire is to escape from her current environment when she is capable of doing so.

She is still finding out slowly during her education that she possesses power. She has the potential to use this power for either good or evil later. Sadly, it will be much easier for her to do evil than good given her current environment.

Pinays on Everest

Wow! All three Filipinas of the Pinay Mount Everest Expedition Team have reached the summit of the world's highest peak!

They are officially the first South East Asian women to reach the top. Not only that, they are the first women to traverse Everest, climbing from the North Side to the peak, then down the South Side. I don't think the guys (Leo Oracion, Pastor Emata, and Romi Garduce) took the same route last year. Noelle Wenceslao reached the summit first, followed by Karina Dayondon and then later by Janet Belarmino.

Janet Belarmino, by the way, was my classmate from Grades 1 to 6 in the Saint Mary's College Elementary Central in Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya. I remember that she used to belong to the NKOTB fans club...he he he She was an avid lawn tennis player even then but I had no idea that she will turn out to be the super-athlete among us. I think she was a tennis varsity player in UP. Aside from mountaineering, she also participates in triathlons (champion), adventure races (winner) and Dragon boat competitions. She just gave birth to her baby boy, Himalaya, five months before the climb.

Congrats to the Pinay Mount Everest Expedition Team for making the Filipino nation proud.

Congrats to Janet for her double blessings. Thank you for making us Novo Vizcayanos prouder.

Philippines and India? or Philippines vs India?

The Outsourcing Insider blog posed this question: "Does the Philippines still need to collaborate with India whose outsourcing industry predicted to lose about 40% of global market share by 2007?"

Collaborate with India? Probably, if we're talking only about the higher tiered services in KPO where Indians have the clear lead. We can learn from them.

However, the Philippines is doing more than okay in most basic BPO services. The country is already posing a serious challenge to India. Our industry is only limited by the number of qualified CSRs from our labor pool. Reforming the educational sector will help address that. Methinks Gloria is looking for a quick solution so she wouldn't have to do the reform herself.

Sharing the BPO pie with India will mean lesser revenue and lesser growth for the domestic sector. It will hurt the Philippine BPO sector in the long run.

I was named after the main character of "The Adventurers" by Harold Robbins. The character was supposedly based on a well-known playboy-diplomat who lived during the author's time. The first chapter of the book is an epilogue where it tells you that the protagonist died early in his life. This is what makes the book special. Every passage, every moment matters because the hero will die before his time. Definitely a very good book to read... This is one of the better books of Harold Robbins.

...to blogging and more. With more focus, I hope. Haven't had the time lately. I had knee surgery last December. Sharing my experience would've been fun but I was either too busy with work and therapy or had no access to the internet at that time.

I was able to help Mimi and Karl test their high-tech Cliquebooth last Saturday at a wedding in the Tagatay Midlands. I can tell the guests liked it a lot. The younger set had multiple runs at it. Luigi and Ria Trillo had their clique(?) taken. Rissa Samson and her friend had theirs too. Vicky Morales wanted one with her friends but the booth was already closed. Even the not-so-young seemed impressed with Karl's idea of photo-on-demand. I ran out of business cards that Mimi had given me because people were interested about the possibility of renting the photobooth for their own events. We're still working out some kinks in the hardware and materials department but I'm confident that the booth will be ready for its formal launch in the near future. Too bad i can't show you more photos at this time because they may contain proprietary information. =P

This was also the first wedding that my friend King and I were able to assist together. It was fun because it reminded me of our UPZS days. We (Mimi, King, and I) were part of the executive council then. Karl was always there to support Mimi, us and the org. We were, and still are a good team. It seemed more like a reunion gimik than a wedding gig.

The wedding itself was a new experience for me. The guest list included high-profile personalities. I was personally overwhelmed with the many beautiful ladies in attendance. I was pleasantly surprised to find that one of my (and King's) high school batchmates was present. We chatted for a while. She asked Lem for a discount. Kailan kaya?;-)

The wedding preps were well-thought of. The fireworks display after the program was amazing. Too bad it took the club management a long time to fix its power supply problems. Five black-outs during the reception were too much. We feel for the groom and bride. The venue also was too windy for comfort. Wind screens would have been a good idea. Luckily, the Cliquebooth was there to provide the fun factor... he he he.

All in all, it was a pretty good wedding. Congrats to the couple. It's good to be back.

The Second Coming

It's been a busy week. Our client arrived here in the country last Sunday morning. He trained the new hires for our department the early part of the week so we only got to meet with him yesterday morning. He updated us on the developments regarding the project at their end. It's good to know that we're on track, and that their clients were generally happy with our output. I find particularly useful the briefing he gave us about their clients' requirements. We were able to clear up some grey areas. I am confident that the team be more proactive now that we know where the project is headed.

The client seems to really like it here. He is a real trouper and would like to try anything Filipino. He's not scared of our "balut" or "tapuy". He already wants San Mig Light every lunch. He also likes to wander a lot. He went to the Baywalk alone late last night. Too bad we can't bring him to Sagada and Banahaw because of his tight schedule. He wants to listen to Filipino music. I'm almost tempted to introduce him to the "exotic"April Boy sound. He plans to go to Greenhills sometime to look for electronic bargains. Hopefully he won't get charged more than the acceptable "foreigner" premium pricing.=)

He want see more "gimik" places here but we can't think of something with distinct Filipino flavor. Suggestions?

Milenyo, Makati and Me

The typhoon Milenyo (international codename: Xangsane) wreaked havoc in Makati yesterday. People were caught unawares. When we woke up yesterday morning, my wife and I had no idea of the coming tempest. I, along with my teammates, was in the office doing the research our American client requested when the rain came. At first we took no notice of it because we're used to the freaky weather in this country. Then at about 10 .am. the strong winds howled... I looked outside the window and the rain was not even falling diagonally. It went in horizontal gusts like to the water coming of a car wash jet's nozzle. I saw a man on a bicycle being pushed backwards by the wind. Car alarms wailed. Power soon went out and the generators kicked in. Our internet connection (Globe) failed so we cannot work on our projects anymore. My wife called and asked if she can pick me up. Our team leader got the go- signal from our operations manager to leave, if the internet is still offline by lunchtime.

Dex and Ricky left around 12. My wife called a few minutes later and told me she's already waiting for me downstairs. I packed my stuff and went down. As soon I exited the double doors, I understood the gravity of the situation. The trees of the once-serene and orderly Salcedo Park were being battered by the 200kph wind. Some of the trees have fallen. Branches were torn-off. Debris and litter were flying everywhere. Corrugated iron sheets from construction sites lay strewn across the road as the storm played with them like they were paper.

Some of my things fell as I neared the car so I had to scramble and pick them up.
I fastened my seat belt as soon as I got in the car. The car was rocking to and fro. Visibility was limited to a few feet. The rain battered the car continuously. Every meter was a battle. We looked for a way out. The traffic signs were not working. The MAPSA officers, who are usually there when not needed nor wanted, could have restored some semblance of order but none were available. Sayang lang yung mga kotong... It was anarchy. A taxi driver cut us off while we were trying to change lanes. A second later a falling tree hit his car's trunk. Our lane was not moving. We took a shortcut near Urdaneta village towards Ayala Ave. We reached EDSA. Billboard structures were swaying and could fall any moment. We passed by a house in an exclusive subdivision whose thick perimeter wall had collapsed towards EDSA. We took the right turn at Kalayaan flyover towards the Fort. Once we had reached the Shell gasoline station, we experienced the full fury of the storm. There were few buildings that could act as wind barriers because most projects were still under construction. A heavysignboard from a commercial area flattened two parked cars. It seems no one was inside the cars.

We decided to take refuge at the nearby Market! Market! Mall. Debris were coming at us as we crawled towards the covered parking lot. As we entered the building, the wind had increased in intensity. The car shuddered every gust. The tires were slipping against the pavement. We were able to park in the second level. We held on tight to the railings as we crossed the slippery walkway that leads towards the mall. Three men were stationed at the double doors to keep them closed against the wind. Yellow Cab and Oody's were the only establishments open. Many people took sanctuary in the Mall. We sat on the floor near the G2000 store and read the books we brought from the car. The storm passed hours later. We arrived home around 4:30 pm. We have no electricity and water until now.

We thank God for keeping us safe.

It describes how the hedge fund managers from Wall Street are changing the local scene in Greenwich, Connecticut. It is estimated that about $120 billion of hedge funds are being managed here.I can only imagine the impact of that much money on the original residents.

Aside from tales 30,000 sq. ft. mansions and personal helicopters, it also profiles 3 of the more known fund managers namely Edwin Lampert ($3.5 Billion), Steven Cohen ($2.5 Billion) and Paul Tudor Jones ($2 Billion).

What frustrates me is that they have that much money, and most of it are being spent on lifestyles that benefit only their massive egos. They don't even live on their $15 million dollar mansions.

They could have helped change many people lives instead.

Long Term Capital Management.

Long Term Capital Management was a hedge fund managed by two Nobel Prize winners that tanked because of over-leveraged aggressive postions. They have roughly $5 billion capital in with about $150 billion aggregate positions. The volatile market movements triggered the collapse of a debt-enabled house of cards. The fund management team's credibility in the industry and the spectacular performance (30-40% net annual return for about 5 years) helped dispell creditors' misgivings about giving loans. The collapse threatened to spread to creditors but was averted by the intervention of the then Fed Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan.

Whats frustrating for the managers is that their market positions were generally sound and would have made them a lot of money if only the fund had the additional fund to offset volatility.

LTCM is a favorite hedge fund story. In this Market, no one is infallible.

He risked $ 10 billion dollars in a single play to force the Bank to devalue the overpriced pound. He earned more than a billion dollars in that play. 2/3 of hedge funds are based offshore to minimize regulation. Recently the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission ruled that hedge funds do not have to register in order to operate. A month later, ten hedge funds withdrew their registration from the said agency.
